Istanbul'da, Usta Bir Japon...Ioki / Love Sushi...Especially Ioki's Sushi

Sushiyle ilk tanışmam felaketti; neredeyse çıkartacaktım. İkinci yiyişimde ise sushiden sadece nefret etmekle kaldım. Ne zorum varsa, sushiyi sevdirmeye çalıştım kendime. Sonunda da başardım. Şu anda en sevdiğim yemeklerden birisi. İstanbul'da güzel sushi ne yazık ki olması gerekenden çok daha pahalı ve az yerde var. Zuma, Vogue ve Akmerkez Home Store Cafe başarılı sushi yapıyor ama dediğim gibi her zaman gidip yiyebileceğim uygunlukta değil fiyatları. İoki ile tanışmam işte bu yüzden harika oldu.

The first time I tried sushi, I almost vomited. The second time, I only felt huge dislike. Don't ask me why, but I just felt that I had to keep going and for some reason like the dish. I'm a stubborn person and in the end, sushi became one of my favorite foods. Unfortunately, good sushi in Istanbul is expensive. That's why I am super happy to have been introduced to Ioki restaurant.

Sensus da Şarapların Konuşsun...Galata Sensus :) / Galata Sensus, all there is to Turkish Wine...

Mimolett'in sommelier'si Atakan Bey, yerli şaraplara olan ilgimizi fark edince, Galata'daki Sensus şarap butiğini ziyaret etmemizi şiddetle tavsiye etti. Hemen Galata Kulesi'nin dibindeki mekan, hayalimdeki yerle birebir örtüştü. 400'den fazla ve sadece yerli çeşitten oluşan şaraplar süslüyor duvarları. Hafif yer altında olmasıyla da tam bir kav havası yakalanmış. İster seçtiğiniz şarabı açtırın, yanında bir tabak yerli yabancı peynirle birlikte orada için, isterseniz uygun fiyata kadehle sunulan şaraplardan birini deneyin. Ortam güzel, doku güzel, fiyatlar makul ve şarap listesi sınırsız. Daha ne isteyebiliriz ki :).

As Turkey is part of Mesapotomia, the homeland of wine, I have always found it sad that we don't have enough wines to represent ourselves abroad. But, that fact is about to change. More and more boutique wineries are producing high quality wines that receive recognition and awards around the world. Sensus Wine Shop in Galata is a dream come true. With more than 400 types of wine, all of which are local, Sensus aims to promote the Turkish wine industry. Prices are affordable, the shop allows for wine and cheese tastings, and tours to their wineyards during vintage season.

Türkiye'nin İlk "Gerçek" Steakhouse'cusu Armutlu Dükkan / Turkey's First "Genuine" Steakhouse... Dukkan in Armutlu

Steakhouse deyince akla ilk gelen isimler Nusret ve Günaydın. Oysa ki, Türkiye'nin ilk gerçek steakhouse'u 2007 yılında Küçük Armutlu'da açılan Dükkan'dır. İzmit'teki besi çiftliğinde, yine Türkiye'nin ilk süt danası üretimini gerçekleştiren Emre Mermer, önce toptan satış, ardından perakende, son olarak da restoran konsepti ile muhteşem etleri tüketicinin karşısına çıkarıyor. Burgerlerine bayıldığım Dükkan Burger ne yazık ki iflas ediyor ve büyümesi gerekirken gittikçe küçülüyor. Neyse ki Küçük Armutlu'daki steakhouse sapasağlam yerinde duruyor ve her zamanki güzel hizmeti ve lezzetli yemekleriyle bizi büyülüyor. 

The concept steakhouse is relatively new in Turkey. Two names that come to mind with regards to steak in Istanbul, are Nusret and Gunaydin. But what many people don't know, is that the first steakhouse was opened in 2007 in Kucuk Armutlu by stockbreeder Emre Mermer. Starting as a retail store, the meat becomes so popular that Dukkan soon turnes into a restaurant. Unfortunately the many Dukkan Burger places are currently closing doors, as the owner has filed for bankruptcy. Thankfully, the original steakhouse in Kucuk Armutlu is still there, serving delicious steaks in an original and peaceful setting.

Nefes Kesici Manzarasıyla Topaz Gümüşsuyu / The Fine Dine Restaurant with a Breathtaking View...Topaz Gumussuyu

Ne yazık ki henüz İstanbul'da Michelin yıldızlı restoran yok. Ancak, bu yıldızları hak edebilecek, bu uğurda çalışan mekanlarımız var. Çok sevdiğimiz Mimolett ve Topaz onlardan ikisi. Mimolett ilk göz ağrımız olsa da, Topaz zengin şarap listesi, kusursuz hizmeti ve eşsiz manzarasıyla İstanbul'un özel restoranlarından birisi.

Unfortunately Istanbul is yet to have a Michelin star restaurant. Hopefully, this is about to change.  Two strong candidates for the star are Mimolett and Topaz. Although Mimolett is our first love, Topaz, with its local and foreign degustation menus, rich wine list, outstanding service, and breathtaking Bosphorus view, is an Istanbul special.

Kuru Çeker Canım...Hüsrev Lokantası / The Favored Dish Dried Beans at the Famous Husrev Restaurant

Hacı Abdullah Hüsrev'in 1928 yılında Rize'de açtığı bakkalı, 1958 yılında oğlu Fahri Hüsrev, önce omlet ve sütün servis edildiği "Temiz Süt Evi", ardından köftenin satıldığı "Temiz Köfte Salonu" haline getiriyor. 1961 yılında, yeni bir dükkanın kendisine tahsis edilmesiyle, Fahri Hüsrev buranın adını Hüsrev Lokantası koyuyor ve böylece ünlü Hüsrev'in temeli atılmış oluyor.

Turks are crazy about the dried beans dish. It is a local specialty favored by everyone. Though there are many places serving dried beans, one that has become in particularly well known, is Haci Husrev. Founded in 1961 in Rize, the restaurant now has branches in both Ankara and Istanbul. Whether on a business trip or on holiday, it is most likely that you will at one time end up in Husrev, enjoying a bowl of dried beans over some buttered rice.

Huzur İçinde...Den Cafe Nişantaşı.../ The Boho Den Cafe Nisantasi

İstanbul'un en sevdiğim caddelerinden bir tanesi Nişantaşı Mim Kemal Öke. Sıkça gittiğim Delicatessen ve İstanbul'da eşi olmayan Fransız restoranı La Brise burada. Bir de Den Cafe var. Lezzetli kokteylleri, muhteşem aperativoları, DJ'li akşamları ve popüler hamburgerleriyle sıkı bir müdavim kitlesine sahip bir yer burası. Havaların güzelleşmesiyle, kendimizi dışarıya atma ihtiyacı duyuyoruz. Bu nedenle, güneşli bir Pazar gününde, Den Cafe'nin dış mekanında oturup ettiğimiz  kahvaltıdan bahsetmek istiyorum.

One of my favorite streets in Istanbul is Mim Kemal Oke in Nisantasi. Delicatessen, which I often talk about and the popular French Bistro La Brise are both located here. Then there is Den Cafe. With its delicious coctails, aperativos, DJ evenings, and huge burgers, Den Cafe is favored by a considerable amount of people, in particular bohos. The summer is almost here and we all feel like throwing ourselves out to get the best out of the sun. Hence, I want to talk about a sunny day, when enjoying Den Cafe's breakfast while seated outside.

P.F. Chang's...Etiler'in Amerika'lı Çinlisi / P.F. Chang's...The American Chinese in Etiler

Arizona'da kurulan ve dünyada 225'ten fazla şubesi bulunan P.F. Chang's'i, NY'da iki yıl geçirmeme rağmen hiç duymadığımı itiraf ediyorum. Ne zaman ki Etiler Nispetiye'ye, o görkemli iki atıyla boy göstermeye başlıyor, o zaman aslında ne kadar popüler olduğunu öğreniyorum.

P.F. Chang's, Kasım 2012'de kapılarını açtığı günden bu yana, tıklım tıklım. Devasa bir mekana sahip olduğunu düşünürseniz, bu oldukça iyi bir başarı. Farklı ve zengin sosları, mekanın dekorasyonu ve havası, P.F. Chang's'i bu kadar popüler yapan özelliklerin başında geliyor. 

With more than 225 branches around the world, American based Chinese P.F. Chang's is finally in Istanbul. Considering the lack of Chinese restaurants we have in Turkey, it comes as no surprise that P.F. Chang's is fully packed every day since the first day it opened in November, 2012. P.F. Chang's is located in Etiler, on Nispetiye street, and has managed to show a great presence, much thanks to its gigantic horse statues in front of the restaurant.
