Karaköy'ün Yeni Rengi Bej / Karakoy's New Color Bej

For a long time Karakoy, the neighborhood just below Asmalımescit (Taksim), did not attract much attention. It was only Istanbul Modern Museum that people would come to visit. Therefore, it is in fact not a surprise that the government decided to convert the area into an art and design spot.

Lal Dedeoğlu'nun ablası Emine Dedeoğlu tarafından açılan "Kağıthane" adındaki yer biraz İstanbul Modern'in mağazasını andırıyor. Özellikle not defterlerine bayıldım.
Kahvaltımızı bitirip güneşten de iyice faydalandıktan sonra Fransız Geçidi içinden geçerek garajın yolunu tutmaya karar verdik. Lab İstanbul mimari ofisin içinde bir vintage gözlük pop-up dükkanı açılmış. Gözlüklerin camları tamamen yeni ve fiyatlar 200TL civarında. Çok eğlenceli ve güzel şeyler olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Haziran'a kadar orada.

Last Sunday, considering the weather was really hot, Ozgur and I decided to escape the crowdy cafe's by the Bosphorus and try out bej kahve and see how much of a change had occured.
The cute place is located in the French Passage; thus an ideal spot to check out some fun stores as well.

It's not hard to find. Just ask for the police station and you'll see the place next to it. The neon green chairs will tell you you're in the right spot.
The "pogaca" or savory pastry with cheese filling you see below is almost as preferred in Turkey in the morning as a bagel is in the US. Learning they were a treat made us extra happy.
Ozgur and I decided to share; something that's very usual with Turkish breakfasts. We ordered feta cheese, toasted German bread with house butter and homemade jam, clotted cream with honey and walnuts, and French toast. The French toast was just as we wanted it; plain as if it was made at home.
If you are to go there, I'd recommend you try the same things we did but I do have one addition to make, i.e. to order the breakfast bowl (a mixture of cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, and olives). A few tables had ordered it and it looked amazing.

Definitely try the freshly squeezed pomegranade, orange, and tangerine juice mixture below. It will give you the energy to cope with the Istanbul traffic without a single complaint.

On my way to the toilet I was caught with a nice surprise. Inside of bej there is a design store. Kagithane, i.e. house of paper has lots of fun things worth looking at. I especially fell in love with their notebooks.
On our way back to the car park we decided to go through the French Passage and saw this pop-up  vintage sunglasses store. The prices are roughly 200TL and the glasses are brand new. If you are interested, it is there until end of May 2012.
At the other side of the French passage there is another cafe called Ops. It just opened a month ago but we made a short visit and it looks like it'll bloom. We'll let you know next week when we go there for breakfast (as the place closes at 8:30pm).
