Singapore Fling :)

Önümüzdeki bir kaç yazımız 10 günlük Singapur ve Malezya tatilimiz hakkında olacak. Anlatılacak, gösterilecek o kadar çok şey var ki mecburen bölmek zorundayız. İlk bölüm 3 günlük Singapur gezimimiz ve orada neler yaptığımız hakkında olacak. Restoran ve barları bir sonraki yazıya bırakıyoruz. Gezi kitaplarında anlatılanların ötesine geçmeye çalıştık. Kendimizin düzenlediği bu tatilden inanılmaz keyif aldık; umarız size de az da olsa bu heyecanı aktarmayı başarırız. 

The next few posts will be about our 10 day trip to Singapore and Malaysia. Fortunately, there were so many places to see and so much good food to eat that we had to split our writings. Our first part will include the 3 days in Singapore and the places we saw. The detailed eating&drinking we leave for the second part. Ozgur and I really tried to find things beyond what is written in the travel books and hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

Asya'nın Amerika'sı olarak görülen Singapur dünyanın en büyük finans merkezlerinden birisi olup hayat dolu, enerji fışkıran küçük bir ada ülkesi. Konumu itibariyle Çinli, Malay, Hintli başta olmak üzere bir çok kültürden insanı içinde barındırdığı için mutfağı da bir o kadar zengin ve renkli. Malezya, Endonezya, Kamboçya, Vietnam, Çin, Japonya, Filipinler, Hong Kong ve biraz ileride Avustralya gibi ilgi çekici yerlere yakınlığı ve inanılmaz temiz ve modern oluşu nedeniyle gezmeyi bırakın, yaşamak için ideal bir yer. 

Seen as the US of Asia, Singapore is one of the biggest financial centers and a vibrant, energetic island country. Thanks to its location, the population consists in majority of Chinese, Malaysian, and Indian, hence making the cuisine extremely rich and colorful. Being close to popular travel destinations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, The Phillippines, and further away HK and Australia, as well as the cleanliness and modern appearance of the country makes Singapore not only an attractive place to visit, but also to live in.

Nerede kalmalı?
Raffles Avenue: 
Ritz Carlton ve Mandarin Oriental olmak üzere bir çok lüks otelin yer aldığı bu bölgede lale şeklindeki Art Science müzesi, ünlü Merlion heykeli, durien meyvesi şeklindeki Esplanade ve enteresan yapıdaki Marina Bay Sands otelinin bulunması nedeniyle Singapur'un mutlaka ziyaret edilmesi gereken yerlerinden birisi. Deniz veya kısaca su manzarası seviyorsanız Marina Bay koyu manzaralı bu otellerden birisini tercih edebilirsiniz.

Orchard Road: 
Orchard Road'a uğramadan Singapur'dan ayrılmanız zor. Art arda sıralanmış devasa alışveriş merkezlerinin yer aldığı Orchard Road özellikle sıcak bir günde yerliler dahil herkesin sevgiyle kucakladığı bir cadde haline gelir. Bir çok otel de bu nedenle bu cadde üzerinde yer alıyor. Raffles Avenue'deki lüks oteller yanı sıra daha uygun bütçeli seçenekleri de burada bulabilirsiniz. 
Tanjong Pagor ve Ann Siang Hill:    
Butik otel manyağı olan ben için Singapur devasa yapılarıyla biraz uğraştırıcı oldu ama sonunda hayallerimin bile ötesinde harika bir butik otel bulduk. Amex'in önerdiği Scarlet otel Small Luxury Hotels grubu üyesi olduğu için biraz korkuttu ilk başta ama suit değil de standart odalarından isterseniz fiyat beklediğinizden bile uyguna çıkabilir. Camsız odaları var o yüzden ona dikkat edin.  
Kentin trendy bölgesinde yer alması nedeniyle her daim lüks arabalarını sergilemeye gelmiş, sevgililerini yemeğe çıkarmış Singapur sosyetesini burada görebilirsiniz. Chinatown dibinde yer alması nedeniyle de aynı zamanda lokasyon olarak çok avantajlı. Benim tartışmasız favori bölgem burası oldu.   

Nerede alışveriş yapmalı? 

Orchard Road: 

Bir çok alışveriş merkezinin bulunduğu bu Bağdat Caddesi benzeri yolda bulamayacağınız şey yoktur. 

- ION Orchard en meşhur ve ilgi çekici alışveriş merkezlerinden birisi. Aklınıza gelebilecek her türlü, genellikle de lüks, markanın bulunması alışveriş manyaklarını mutlu ederken, binanın enteresan mimarisi fotoğrafçıları bu modern ve devasa binaya çekiyor. 

- Tanglin Shopping Centre Orchard Road'un en sonunda yer aldığı için diğer alışveriş merkezlerine göre biraz daha sakin ama bu sizi aldatmasın. Bu ekstra mesafeyi yürümeye kesinlikle değer; özellikle antika, sanat ve tasarım ürünleri arıyorsanız. 1000 ideas, Antiques of the Orient ve Select Books mutlaka uğramanız gereken dükkanlar. Tanglin Shopping Centre Pazar günleri kapalı.

Haji Lane: 

Arab street yakınındaki Haji Lane tam bir fashionista cenneti ve alakasız konumu nedeniyle de saklı bir cevher. Küçük bir sokakta sağlı sollu yer alan birbirinden enteresan dükkanlarla biraz Galata'nın ara sokaklarını andırıyor. Renkli bir bisikletten güzel bir çanta veya ev için bir aksesuara kadar her şeyi bulmanız mümkün. Dulcetfig, Pluck, Salad ve Rusty Buttons'a bir şey almayacak olsanız bile içeri girip bakın derim.

Ann Siang Hill: 

Ann Siang Road ve onun paraleli, otelimizin yer aldığı, Erskine Road tıpkı Hagi Lane gibi tasarım dükkanlarıyla dolu iki sokak. Erskine Road üzerindeki Antoinette de alışveriş ortasında mola vermek için güzel bir Fransız patisserie. Fotoğraf tutkunlarının cenneti Lomography mağazası da yine bu bölgede yer alıyor. 12'den önce gitmeyin çünkü çoğu mağaza ve cafe o saatten sonra açılıyor. 

Sim Lim Square: 

1 Rochor Canal Road üzerindeki Sim Lim Square ucuz elektronik almak isteyenler için doğru adres. Pazarlık yapmayı unutmayın. 

Chijmes: 

Çeşitli restoran, dükkan, bar ve sanat galerileri içinde barındıran bu tarihi yapı bir zamanlar rahibeler tarafından yürütülen bir okul ve kadın barınağı olarak hizmet ediyormuş. En dikkat çekici bölümü, artık sergi, düğün ve özel yemekler için kullanılan görkemli kilisesi. Olathe dükkanı eğlenceli hediyelik almak isterseniz ideal. Biz bu alakasız ama komik inek kumbarasını oradan aldık.       

Chinatown: 

Özellikle hediyelik eşya almak ve sadece gezmek için ideal bir yer.

Neil Road'da Tea Chapter:

Çeşitli çaylar ve birbirinden enteresan çaydanlıkları alabileceğiniz güzel bir dükkan. 

Neler kaçırılmamalı?

Sadece yemek yemek ve alışveriş yapmak bile fazlasıyla yeterli olacağına emin olabilirsiniz ama yine de aşağıdakileri de yapmanızı öneririz. 

Tea Chapter'da geleneksel Çin çay seremonisine katılın: 

Bu kesinlikle kaçırmamanız gereken bir şey. Hangi odada, hangi çayı içmek istediğinizi seçiyor, sonra da nasıl yapılacağının demonstrasyonu yapılıyor. Bitince de kendiniz çayınızı içmeye ve o şekilde servis etmeye devam ediyorsunuz. Neil Road üzerindeki bu dükkanın ziyaretçileri arasında Kraliçe 2ci Elizabeth de var. Alt katta içtiğin çayı ve/veya enteresan tasarımlı çaydanlıklardan birisini de almayı unutmayın.
Bu bahaneyle Neil Road üzerindeki rengarenk shophouse'lara da bakma fırsatınız olur böylece :).  

Lau Pau Sat'ta sokak yemeği yiyin: 

Food stall dedikleri yemek arabalarının sıra sıra yer aldığı, sokağın tamamı beyaz plastik masa sandalyelerle kapatıldığı bir yemek cenneti. Arabalardan tüten dumanlar sizi korkutmasın, yemekler leziz. Mutlaka yemeniz gereken iki geleneksel yemek satay ve acı soslu yengeç. Satay bir nevi bizim çöp şiş. 10 çöp 6 SGD (Singapur doları). Etli olan biraz fazla sakızımsı ayardaydı ama acılı tavuk harikaydı. Acı soslu yengece ben bayıldım ama Özgür için biraz fazla acı geldi ve tabi etini çıkartmak için biraz fazla uğraşman lazım. Yine de değdiğine emin olabilirsiniz. Yengeç 60 SGD. Biraz pahalı gelebilir ama porsiyon büyük. Burada kart geçmiyor o yüzden nakit almayı unutmayın.

Chinatown'da alışveriş yapın ve Chinatown Heritage Centre'i ziyaret edin: 

Chinatown özellikle hediyelik eşya almak ve geleneksel shophouse'ları görmek için gidilmesi gereken bir yer. Shophouse'lar Singapur'un eski mimarisini yansıtmakta olup rengarenk yapılarıyla fotoğraf çekmek için harika. Yüksekliklerinin farklı oluşunun maddiyatla alakalı olduğunu öğrendik. Ne kadar yüksekse o kadar zengin sahibi. 

Müze veya sanat galerileri gezmeseniz bile Chinatown Heritage Centre'a mutlaka uğrayın. Bir shophouse'u canlandırmışlar ve odaları teker teker gezebiliyorsunuz. Müzik, seslendirme ve ekranlardaki görüntülerle kendinizi o zamanda shophouse'un içinde hissediyor gibi oluyorsunuz.

Bugis Street içinden yürüyüp meyve yiyin: 

Bugis street tam bir kaos. Yarı açık yarı kapalı alışveriş merkezin içinde sıra sıra sokak lezzetleri ve meyveler satılıyor. Taze sıkılmış bir meyve suyu ve sadece bir dilim meyve sıcak ve nemli havada çok iyi gelecektir. Cesaretiniz varsa mis kokulu durien meyvesini deneyebilirsiniz örneğin :). Ben o kadar cesaretli olamadım, dragon fruit'le yetindim.

Marina Bay sahil şeridi boyunca yürüyüp landmarkları görün:
Marina Promenade üzerinde keyifli bir yürüyüş yaparak Singapur'un simgeleri Esplanade, ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands oteli ve Merlion'ı yakından bir kerede görebilirsiniz. Akşam 6:30 gibi giderseniz muhteşem fotoğraflar yakalamanız mümkün.

Singapur Botanik Garden'i ziyaret edin: 
Biraz klişe de olsa Singapur Botanik Bahçe özellikle orkide bölümü ile görülmeye değer. Botanik Bahçeye giriş ücretsiz ve metro ile doğrudan içine ulaşım var. Orkide bölümü içinse çok ufak bir tutar olan 5SGD giriş ücreti alınıyor.

Masaj yaptırın: 
Özellikle walk in masaj salonlarında çok ucuza reflexology ayak masajı yaptırmanız mümkün. Özgür bu konuda biraz hassas olduğu için tanınmış bir marka olan Kenko'yu tercih ettik. Bir çok şubesi var ve sadece ayak masajı değil, geleneksel thai, bali vs. diğer masajları da yaptırmanız mümkün. Hem salonları çok temiz hem fiyatları ortalama.
Rooftop barlardan birisinde Singapur Sling için: 
Marina Bay Sands'in tepesindeki açıkhava barı muhteşem bir manzaraya sahip. Sıcaktan baydım derseniz de Swiss otelin 71ci kattaki New Asia Bar klima ve manzara yanı sıra uygun fiyata Moet Şampanya satıyor. Daha detaylı bar tavsiyelerimizi başka bir posta bırakıyoruz.

Diğer: Seyahat kitaplarında bulabileceğiniz diğer etkinliklerin arasında teleferik ile Sentosa adası, Clark Quay'de yürüyüş ve tekne ile Bay turu, Little India ve Arab Street ziyaretleri yer alıyor. 

Beklediğimizden uzun oldu maalesef yazı ama her şeyi paylaşmak isteyince böyle oluyor ki inanın daha çoook vardı :). Bir sonraki yazı Singapur'da yemek ve gece hayatı hakkında olacak. Umarım faydalı bir yazı olmuştur :).

Where to stay?
Raffles Avenue: 
Most of the luxury hotels, including Ritz Carlton and Mandarin Oriental, are located in this area by the Marina Bay. Since Singapore's main landmarks such as the Merlion (Singapore's icon), the tulip shaped Art Science Museum, inspired by the durien fruit the Esplanade, and the famous Marina Bay Sands hotel are all located in this area it is a must go place. If you like the view of water, this area might be the best choice for you.  

Orchard Road: 
It's almost impossible to leave Singapore without visiting Orchard Road. Lined up one after another are the many gigantic shopping malls. Considering the humid and hot weather, these shopping centres are more than welcome, not only to the tourists but also to the locals. No wonder many hotels are located in this area. In addition to luxury hotels, you may also find more budget friendly options here. 
Tanjong Pagor ve Ann Siang Hill:    
I'm a boutique hotel freak and had a bit of difficulty with all the high rise buildings in Singapore but thanks to Amex I was able to find a wonderful hotel on Erskine Road in Ann Siang Hill. Scarlet Hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels, is a bit pricy unless you chose a standart room, when, in that case, gets reasonably priced. Make sure you ask for a room with a window. 
Known as the city's trendy area, it is home to many fancy cafe's and shops and hence, the place to hang out for locals. Being close to Chinatown, this strategically located area is my absolute favorite.

Where to shop? 

Orchard Road: 
Home to many of the major shopping malls, Orchard road has everything you need.
- ION Orchard is probably the most famous and attractive shopping mall. All the major brands, especially the luxury ones, can be found here. If you, on the other hand doesn't like shopping, I promise you'll still enjoy your time taking pictures of this interesting design building.  

- Tanglin Shopping Centre is located at the far end of Orchard Road, and hence a bit less crowdy than the other malls. But don't let that fool you, because it's definitely worth the extra walk; especially if you're into art, antiques, and design products. 1000 ideas, Antiques of the Orient, and Select Books are must visit stores. The mall is closed on Sundays.

Haji Lane: 

This short but interesting street by Arab street is a total fashionista paradise and due to it's totally doesn't make sense location, a hidden treasure. You can find all kinds of interesting stores selling items ranging from bicycles to design bags. Even if you don't buy, do take a look inside of Dulcetfig, Pluck, Salad, and Rusty Buttons. 

Ann Siang Hill: 

Ann Siang Road and the parallel street Erskine road, where the Scarlet Hotel is located, is full of fashion stores similar to the ones on Hagi Lane. Antoniette on Erskine road is a cute French patisserie you can stop to have a coffee break. Lomography, the famous camera shop, is also situated in this area. Try to come after noon, since most of the shops and cafes open at that time. 

Sim Lim Square: 

Sim Lim Square on 1 Rochor Canal Road is the right address if you want to buy cheap electronics. Don't forget to bargain!  

Chijmes: 
Chijmes is a well known complex with several restaurants, bars, shops and art galeries in it. The chapel, once served as a shelter for women and as a school run by the nuns, is the most attractive sight. It's now used for wedding ceremonies as well as art exhibitions and private events. The store Olathe is worth a visit to buy some souvenirs. Although not relevant, Ozgur got me this cute little cow piggybank from there.   

Chinatown: 
Especially ideal to buy souvenirs for cheap or just to take a quick walk. 

Tea Chapter on Neil Road:
A beautiful store selling various teas and Chinese tea pots and cups, such as the lovely pig tea pot I bought.

What not to miss?

Participate in a traditional Chinese tea ceremony at Tea Chapter:
This is one thing you should definitely try. First you decide what type of tea in which type of setting you want and then a lady gives a demonstration on how it's done. Once finished you can stay as long as you like continuing the same ritual drinking tea while eating some snacks and enjoying the conversation around you. Queen Elizabeth the second is one of the visitors of this nice little store on Neil Road. Don't forget to visit the shop to get some tea or maybe a tea pot similar to mine. Coming here is also a great excuse to see the colorful shophouses.

Eat street food on Lau Pau Sat: 

We'll write a seperate post on food in Singapore but this is an experience in itself. Lau Pau Sat is a street closed to traffic in the evenings when all the food stalls line up and the street fills with plastic tables and chairs. Don't let the smell and smoke scare you. The food is delicious. Two must haves are the spicy chicken satay and the chilli sauce crab. 10 spits of satay cost only 6SGD whereas the chilli sauce crab cost 60SGD. Both well worth the price though, considering the portion of the crab was huge. You might have to work it with your hands though, one thing that might annoy you considering you're not close to a sink :). Credit cards are not accepted so don't forget to brink lots of cash or only eat satay.

Shop in Chinatown and visit Chinatown Heritage Centre: 

Chinatown is great to get some souvenirs or just stroll around. But more fun than that was a visit to the Chinese Heritage Centre. Even if you don't go to any of the museums, please spend an hour here. Not only do you get to learn about the history of Singapore but also do you see how a real shophouse in the past looks from within. The music, sound, and pictures on the screens makes you go back in time and experience it. 

Eat fresh fruit on Bugis Street: 
Bugis street is a total chaos. This is the place to get all kinds of fresh fruits and small tastings of local dishes. A fresh fruit juice in the heat is more than accepted but not the durien fruit so many are eating on the street. O guy from our hotel called the durien: "taste of heaven, smell of hell". Well, I wasn't that brave to taste and so settled with the dragon fruit (I did try it later though as a dessert, but that you'll have to wait for my other post to read about :)).

Walk on Marina Promenade and spot landmarks: 

Do a nice one-two hour walk on Marina Promenade and get a chance to see Esplanade, ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands hotel, and the Merlion all in once. Try to be by the Esplanade around 6:30 to capture beautiful shots of the bay.

Visit Singapur Botanical Garden: 
It might be a bit cliche but if you have time, do visit the botanical gardens, especially the orchid garden. The botanical garden itself is free of charge but the orchid garden has an entrance fee of 5SGD. The easiest access might be with the subway.

Get a massage: 
There are a numerous amount of massage saloons, especially foot reflexology ones, where you can get a massage for really cheap. However, if you prefer a more private and fancy one, you should try Kenko. This well known brand has several brances in Singapore and both Ozgur and I loved our food massages. You can also get a tradional thai, bali, or other full body massage as well, if you like.
Have a Singapore Sling in one of the rooftop bars: 
Marina Bay Sands' open air rooftop bar has an amazing view. On the other hand, if you need airconditioning, New Asia Bar on the 71st floor of the Swiss hotel, not only offers a great view but also relatively cheap Moet Champagne. More on bars we leave for another post.

Others: Other things to do you will find in travel books include a visit to man made Sentosa Island, Little India and Arab Street, and a boat trip from Clark Quay.

Unfortunately we managed to make it longer than hoped for but there's so much to share. The next post will be about dine and night life in Singapore. Hope you've enjoyed all written so far..
