Indochine Singapore vs. Indochine Istanbul

Indochine'i daha önce hiç duymuş muydunuz? Özgür bana 1992 yılı Fransız filmi Indochine'i gösterene kadar ben hiç duymamıştım.

Have you ever heard of Indochine before? I personally, knew nothing about it until Ozgur showed me the French 1992 movie Indochine. That's why it's such a luck that we got the chance to visit the restaurants Indochine, first in Singapore and then Istanbul (both having nothing to do with each other). Of course, we couldn't hold ourselves back from writing about both in the same post and compare them, even if slightly. Hope you'll enjoy..
...........................................................................................................................

Fiyatlara gelince;

Onu da Indochine'in yeni açılmasına bağlıyorum.

Yemekle birlikte şarap yerine kokteyllerle devam ettik.

Indochine comes from the words India and China and is the by French referred to as the area between India and China. Todays Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, Indochine was a French colony between the years 1884-1954. The Indochine cuisine captures the local tastes o this area as well as some from France.

Indochine Singapore
There are a couple of Indochine restaurants in Singapore, but the best and most popular one is the one inside of the Asian Civilization Museum. Situated by the Singapore river Indochine has a wonderful view. Its fancy, especially with the crystal candeliers, decoration, as well as the location, has turned the restaurant into a favorable one.
The place is also home to Bar Opium, a vodka and prosecco bar, which has hosted many famous parties and events, including the Asian MTV awards post-party.
Almost all the tables are nicely positioned, with the river view. Ozgur and I were given a table just by the water next to some lovely bronze statues.

The menu was extremely rich, making it difficult to choose at first but eventually we decided to go with half a dozen fresh Australian oysters and Vietnamese fresh rice paper prawn rolls.

The oysters were really fresh and tasty. It was a great choice, especially because the oysters were served on ice and the weather was really hot. I just wish they would have added a bit of flavor, even with the sauce, to make it something extra and beyond usual. It was still great though.
I especially liked the fresh rice paper prawn rolls. Maybe it's because I have a weakness for rice paper but it felt healthy and uplifting. Ozgur on the other hand, didn't like it at all. I guess it was simply too much green for him with all the lettuce, bean sprouts, and mint leaves.
I forgot to take a picture, but while waiting for our starters, we were served some fried shrimp chips. I love them..

The wine menu was almost as rich as the food menu. Because the weather was so hot we ordered a fresh and crispy white wine, Friuli Pinot Grigio. It's a classic choice of Ozgur's and mine.

Ozgur ordered chicken and I meat for main course.
The Cambodian style chilli and basil chicken had a great sauce. It was prepared in red chillies, holy basil, and garlic, my favorite three.
For meat I went with the saravan drunken venison. The venison was wok fried and mixed with long beans, white onions, chillies, bamboo shoots, hot basil, and fresh green peppercorns sprinkled with rice wine. Why did I go with the venison? Because it was served with my one and only love bambo shoots :). I'm not sure if it was because it was had been fried in the wok or because it was venison, but the meat was really tender and juicy. Much better than any we'd had so far in Singapore.
The restaurant did have my favorite dessert, banana fritters with ice-cream, but for the sake of our blog, we decided to try the Indochine Trio dessert. Asian taro egg custard, black glutinous rice with coconut milk & fresh mangoes and vanilla ice-cream, in the same order as shown on the picture below. They were all delicious but I especially liked the black sticky rice and mango combination. Coconut milk just seems to work with anything :).
The food served at Indochine you can get at other places as well but the ambiance, view, taste of the food.. all combined, it's a great place to go.

As for the prices;
Starters;  half a dozen oysters cost 21SGD and the shrimp rolls 16SGD.
Main Courses; the chicken cost 24SGD and the vernison 29SGD.
The trio platter, like many other desserts on the menu cost 15SGD.
The wine cost 115SGD but you can get both cheaper and more expensive wines at the restaurant.

Indochine Istanbul
A short time after our visit to Singapore we discovered the newly opened restaurant, Indochine Istanbul. Close to Tunel in Taksim, Beyoglu, Indochine is located on the ground floor of an apartment on a silent street. There is nothing but a small tabela that shows Indochine exists. I love that, it shows that only people who know about the place comes.

The bar is to the left of the entrance and has a seperate section from the main dining hall. Red and black are the dominant colors of the restaurant. There is a fireplace and some comfortable chairs in the dining hall, making the place look rather cosy.

From what we had heard from GQ magazine, the coctails at Indochine are really tasty. I have to say, they do have some really interesting mixes on the menu. We decided to start of with some martinis. Ozgur went with watermelon and I with earl grey.

I loved the glasses in the sense that it made it feel like the coctails were unique for that place. The earl grey martini was a bold but very successful move. The watermelon again great for the summer. If we have one complaint, that is that the coctails weren't as cold as they should have been. Other than that, yummy.
The menu, as opposed to the one in Singapore, had been kept very simple with only a few dishes to choose among. Not only does it make it easier to pick, but also does it give me an impression of a more sophisticated restaurant. I've always prefered that.

As starters, we ordered the three bruschetta plate, named Tren Banh Mi Nuong. The toppings were Asian mushrooms, smoked salmon, and quail egg. Especially the quail egg and Asian mushroom bruschetta were amazing. The bread was made with a mix of five spices and extremely delicious, especially due to the chilli. This was definitely our favorite dish of the night.
Seeing satay on the menu brought back fond memories of the streets of Singapore and we immediately ordered a plate. The spicy chicken satay, Ga Xao Sa Te wasn't as good as the ones we'd had on the food stalls in Singapore. This one was a lot more plain and the peanut sauce wasn't as heavy as we were used to. Still it was a good try and I guess we had probably liked it had we not tasted the ones in Singapore.
Still happy with our starters we moved on to the main course. Ozgur ordered grilled jumbo shrimp salad with fresh pineapples. The orange and sesame sauce was amazing. It worked perfect with the greens and the pineapples, adding so much flavor and taste. I didn't try the shrimp but Ozgur said he'd had better. I'd love to get your opinion if you try.
I wanted something light and interesting so my waiter suggested the day's special, carpet shells with coconut sauce. I'm normally not a fan of mussels but this plate I loved. The coconut sauce really added something extra. Accompanied with the five spices toasted bread and bean sprouts, it was delicious plate.
Rather than ordering wine, we continued with trying new coctails. This time, Ozgur went with the lime daiquiri and I with the strawberry caipiroska. The lime daiquiri was a bit strong for our taste but the strawberry caipiroska really yummy. I just wish they had used crushed ice rather than normal ice cubes.
All coctails we tried were tasty, except for the mojito. As you can see from the picture below, it was not good at all. Maybe it was just that day but I'd still recommend you stay on the safe side and order something else. Anyways, you can get a mojito anywhere but not an earl grey martini.
Chocolate souffle is the only dessert on the menu so we ordered that. It's served in different Lavazza coffee cups and really good. I think it's been prepared in advance and only heaten when brought to the table cause the cup was really hot and the sufle itself got cold pretty quick but it was still delicious, especially if you are a chocolate fan.
Despite having some minor issues, we are extremely thankful of this brave and bold act to bring in a new cuisine to Turkey. Also, a pretty interesting coctail menu is something we lack in Turkey, hence Indochine gets an extra applause for that. Will we go back? Definitely. We'll give it some time, since it is a new spot, and then soon pay it another visit.

Our Points:

As for the prices;
Starters cost approximately 15-17TL.
Main courses cost 21-42TL.

  1. Interesting comparison. I love that the Singapore restaurant used venison. Game goes so well with SE Asian flavours - it stands up to the heat and fire.

It sounds like the Istanbul version is pretty good too. Shame they toned down the flavours, but that is a common problem pretty much anywhere outside SE Asia when it comes to flavour. Never the less, it;s always good to get a new cuisine locally.

If ever you are in London, there is one place that does authentically good Thai food called The Heron - it's on an unpromising road, under a boring looking pub, a real hidden spot with superb food. if you like chilli heat ;)

    2. No worries, check out this blog post for more details: http://theskinnybib.com/2011/04/17/the-heron-unpretentiously-thai/ - happily the menu is now no longer in Thai, but in English, which makes it a little easier.
