Hamdi Restaurant'ta İftara Beş Kala.../ Iftar at Hamdi Restaurant

We are currently in the time of Ramadan, the holy month of blessing. The time for prayer, fasting, and charity...With the fasting, comes also the iftar, i.e. the breaking of the fast. Many Turkish restaurants prepare menues special to the iftar. Having a lot to pick from, we decided on Hamdi; a restaurant not only popular for its food but also for its location and beautiful view. It's the best place for a tourist to experience the feeling and atmosphere of the fast.

We still had some time before iftar so we decided to walk from Karakoy. Passing the Galata Bridge at the sunset allowed us to enjoy a magnicifient view of the Old Istanbul and the beautiful silhouette of all the mosques in the surrounding.
Hamdi Restaurant is located right across the Galata Bridge, next to the Eminonu New Mosque; one of the best known sights of Istanbul. It has five floors with a terrace on the top, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Bosphorus and Halic. Despite having so much room, the entire place was full. Luckily, Ozgur had reserved in advance for a spot at the terrace.

Cold starters had already been placed on the table. In addition the traditional dates, black olives, and cheese, mushroom with tomato sauce, eggplant puree, and yoghurt with fried peppers were served. The common way to break the fast is with dates. Dates are an excellent source of fiber, magnesium, potassium, sugar, and have carbohydrates which help the body to slower digest the food, hence can help you stay full for longer. It is also the food the Prophet Muhammed ate when he broke his fast. The dates at Hamdi were fresh and tasty so we finished them before moving to the rest of the food.
At Ramadan it is normal to eat a certain type of cured spice beef with fenugreek named pastirma. However, the smell takes over you entirely and doesn't go away for several days. I believe that's why Hamdi Restaurant preferred to serve another salami instead. It still had a strong flavor and was really good.
As the sugar level drops, it is normal to eat marmalade, honey, and other sweets at the iftar. I got to try white mulberry and peach for the first time. Unfortunately, they were both too sweet for my taste. I wish they had offered something less sugary like orange.
Tahini and grape molasses mix is pretty common in Turkey as, not only does it keep your body warm, but also satisfy your desire for sweets. My mom and brother always have it at breakfast and love to use it as paste on bread.
The honey with clotted cream was delicious. The color of the honey was a lot darker than I'm used to and had a more aromatic flavor. It goes best with hot lavash (thin bread).
The green salad with tomatoes, cucumber, onion, lettuce, and parsley is again a Turkish classic and the best choice to accommodate a meat or vegetable dish. It was fresh and helped the stomach digest all the heavy food.
Lentil is the usual choice of soup during Ramadan. Despite the hot weather outside, nothing can beat a boiling cup of lentil soup after all the many hours of fasting. It's light but at the same time fulfilling. The one at Hamdi wasn't as warm as I had hoped for. I guess it's because they serve it to  all the tables at once. Or maybe it was just that day. At least I hope so.
The bread was fresh and tasty and enough to satisfy not only our hunger but also our eyes.
For hot starters, we got su boregi, icli kofte, lahmacun, and dried dolma. So boregi is a noodle like layered pastry filled with feta cheese. It's probably the most common borek in Turkey. The one we tried at Hamdi was a bit too oily for my taste but you might like it better this way.  The best thing about it was that it was served warmish.
Icli kofte is a meatball that has been coated with a paste made of cracked wheat and then fried. It's a true delicacy and one of my favorite hot starters. The picture doesn't do it justice as the taste was just the way I wanted; crispy and stuffed with crushed walnuts.
The dry dolma was without no doubt our favorite of the night. The waiter brought different versions of the dolma for us to choose among. I went with the red pepper and Ozgur with the eggplant. The red pepper was, as expected, very hot and had passed the spice to the rice as well. Ozgur, who preferres a slightly milder taste, loved his choice. I'd try both if I were you.
The kebab plate looked pretty huge; especially after all the starters. It contained different varieties, such as chicken shish, kebab with pistachio, lamb shish, and Adana kebab. Adana kebab gets is name from the city Adana and is minced meat mixed with red pepper grilled on a spit. They were all tasty but the kebab with pistachio beat them all. Even if you don't go to Hamdi, you have to try it at a kebab restaurant in Turkey.
Hamdi Restaurant makes its own baklava and has a pretty good variety to choose from. The baklavas are filled with lots of pistachio and contain a big amount of syrup. The taste was great but I wish they had offered other desserts as well, especially gullac (a sweet made from dry sheets of dough soaked in milky syrup, filled with nuts), which can only be found during Ramadan.

Despite all my criticism, Hamdi Restaurant is one of the special places Istanbul has to offer in terms of amazing view, local cuisine, and great atmosphere.

The iftar dinner cost 70TL per person.
