Cihangir'de bir Yolculuk...Journey / A Great "Journey" in Cihangir

İki iftar yazısının üstüne hepimizin çok sevdiği o güzel kahvaltılara geri dönmek istiyorum. Karaköy, Bebek, Yeniköy ve Nişantaşı'ndaki kahvaltı mekanlarına geniş yer verdik blogumuzda; oysa ki semt olarak bayıldığım, her köşe başında bir cafesi bulunan Cihangir hakkında bir tane bile kahvaltı mekanı yazısı yazmadığımızı fark ettim. O yüzden Ramazan biter bitmez koşarak keşfe çıktık; Cihangir'lilerin favorisi Journey'e gittik.

Following two iftar (breaking of the fast) posts, I think it's time to go back to our favorite meal of the day: breakfast. We have written many posts on breakfast spots in Nisantasi, Karakoy, Bebek, and Yenikoy, but realized we've missed a neighbourhood that is actually known for its cafes and lively crowd: i.e. Cihangir. The moment Ramadan was over, we woke up early on a weekend day and went to explore the streets of Cihangir and found ourselves at Journey: one of the favorites in the area.
For English, please scroll down until the Turkish text is finished...

Journey'in kahvaltısı beni benden aldı.
Saat sabahın 11'i olmadan dışarıdaki masalar kapılmış, içeridekilerin çoğu dolmuştu. En yakın zamanda akşam içkisi için uğrayacağız.

Fiyatlara gelince; Özgür'ün scone tabağı 11TL, benim Journey Kahvaltı ise 19TL'ydi. Tost ve yumurtalar da 10-14TL arasında değişiyor.

Despite not having heard about Journey before, we knew exactly that it was the place we wanted to spend our morning. That's the effect it has on you: welcoming. From the library to the simple wall clock, from the colorful chairs to the floor tiles, everything was done in such perfection and detail. The owner Fisun Tasgin had managed not only to appeal to the designers but also to create an intimate and cozy atmosphere. We went for breakfast but I've heard it's also pretty popular for after work hang out and dine. The coctail menu, in particular, caught my attention.
There's only three tables outside but since we arrived early we were lucky to get one. The antique metal chairs and table gave us the feel of sitting at a cafe in Paris.
Journey's breakfast took my breath away. Himalayan salt, home made bread, free range eggs, olive oil from the Edremit region, butter and cream from local farmers in Bolu, fresh out of the oven scone...how much more organic can it get! The options on the menu were all so appealing I had a hard time deciding. Luckily I had Ozgur, who picked one of my favorite choices, i.e. English scone platter, leaving me with my other favorite choice, i.e. Journey Breakfast II.

The English scone platter was composed of three pieces of scones, two home made jams, olives, cream cheese and butter. The scone was so good you could easily eat it plain. It had just got out of the oven and was still hot. The butter melted and became one with the bread. The presentation also added to the organic feel with the cotton cloth and the wooden plate.
Ozgur's scone plate appeared as a diet next to mine. The Journey Breakfast II contained fried free range egg, aged cheese, aged cottage cheese, traditional village cheese, olives, butter, honey, double cream, tomatoes, cucumber, green peppers, parsley, and stone oven sesame simit.
The bread was so good the three pieces they brought to the table wasn't enough. It was a fulfilling, satiated, home made bread you can only get on the country side. They had toasted it to the extent that it was almost like a crisp bread, but in an awesome way :). Despite loving sesame simit, I didn't even look at it that day.
I'm a fan of freshly squeezed juices, in particular orange and grapefruit combo, as the orange is too sweet and the grapefruit too sour by themselves, but together make the perfect couple :). Unfortunately, most places have only orange juice. To my happy surprise, Journey had the mix and for that I will always be a loyal customer. My only complaint would be that they hadn't kept the fruits in the fridge and hence, the juice was rather warm. Ice only spoils the taste so I hope it will be different the next time.
Whether an egg is free range or not can be most easily understood by the color of the egg. Whereas a regular egg has a pale yellow yolk, a free range egg has a much darker, orange like yolk. Of course the taste is so much better. The picture doesn't do it justice but the egg at Journey was definitely a free range egg. Also, the fact that the chef hadn't left any slimy egg white made me enjoy it even more.
Have you ever seen a tomato this red? I know I haven't seen one in Istanbul; that's for sure. It was all juicy and aromatic. A small detail which made such a difference.
While on the subject red, I thought this picture from the streets of Cihangir would fit in as a nice ending. Both Ozgur and I loved Journey. Not only in terms of the food but also in terms of the atmosphere and the friendliness of the waiters'. At 11am, the tables outside were occupied and inside almost full. We're definitely going back soon for those after work coctails.

As for the prices; Ozgur's scone platter cost 11TL and my Journey Breakfast 19TL. The toasts and eggs varied from 10 to 14TL.
