Beyoğlu'nda Gizli bir Ege'li...Eleos / Aegean Breeze in Beyoglu...Eleos

Mavi beyaz renk kombinasyonuna her zaman bayılmışımdır. Bana yazı ve güzel Akdeniz sahillerini hatırlatıyor. Beyoğlu'nda tarihi Hıdivyal Palas'ın içinde saklı Eleos bu hissiyatı İstanbul'a taşımayı başarmış.

I've always loved the blue and white color combination. It reminds me of summer and the beautiful Meditteranean coast. Hidden in the historical Hidivyal Palace building in Beyoglu, Eleos manages to bring out this feeling in the center of Istanbul. The blue and white color decor, tavern ambiance, and delicious tastes from the Meditteranean on the menu all together create a cozy and cheerful restaurant. You can't tell from outside, but Eleos has a wonderful view of the Bosphorus and the old town. Hence, it's understandable why this is such a favorite spot to many.

O zamandan beri her restoranda köpoğlu istiyorum.

My friend Merve, whom I went with, is a regular at Eleos. Thus, we were able to get a superbly located table on the terrace. It's possible to see the view from inside as well but the best tables are on the terrace. The menu is fish dominated with options of delicious tastes from the Armenian and Greek cuisine. Being intimidated by all the options, I left the choices to Merve.

As soon as we sat down, our complimentary shots of uzo arrived. Without waisting any time we saluted each other and finished our drinks just to order a new round. Sugar and lemon had been added to the uzo, making it easier to drink and of course be drunk.
Because it was only the two of us, we tried to keep the cold starters few. Of course, as always, that was impossible. Because we had raki, the white cheese and melon were a must. In addition, we ordered cabbage leaf wrap, tulumaki, kopoglu, and kaya korusu (all to be explained below).
Tulumaki is a starter made from aged skin bag goat cheese mixed with hot pepper, walnut crust, and dried tomato. The added garlic, cumin, and chili powder, as always, served as perfect spices to enrich the food.
Kopoglu is a common dish in fish restaurants although some places call it saksuka with yoghurt. Its main ingredient is fried eggplant prepared with garlic, olive oil, tomato sauce, and yoghurt. Usually pepper and whole tomatoes are also added. You could tell that the ingredients came from the Aegean, as the smell of the eggplant was so strong and the taste of the tomato sauce so rich.
Kaya korusu is a type of a plant/herb that grows in the Aegean that has been pickled and served with lemon. By nature, it has a wonderful thyme aroma that, combined with lemon juice, makes a perfect starter. Here a bit too much lemon juice had been added, hence dominating the taste, but still it was good.
The cabbage leaf wrap with mussel and rice stuffing was one of my favorites of the night. Normally you eat either mussels and rice or rice wrapped in cabbage leaves; never the combination. The wrap is boiled and the rice is slightly sweet thanks to the currant added.
While waiting for the hot starter, our waiter brought a complimentary plate to the table, i.e. fried zucchini slices. Because the zucchini had been fried and decorated with dill, the effect was crispy chips with dill flavor; of course much healthier. With the yoghurt dip, I could easily eat it all the time.  Btw. because it got really dark at this point, my pics from this moment forward are kind of crap. My apologies.
The fish noodle in stew is a must. The noodles we thought were made of pasta, i.e. flour, were in fact strips of different fishes. I can't recall them all but know for sure that one was crab (as you can probably guess as well :)). Mushroom, spring onion, and peppercorn were also added and the whole mixture had been cooked in a creamy sauce. I try to stay away from creamy sauces, especially during summer, but I'm glad we ordered this one. It's not light at all but really tasty.
For main course, we ordered seared sole fish. The fish was cut in small chunks and mixed with tomatoes, parsley, onion, and mushroom in a stew with lots of butter. So much that I could feel the smell of butter from a part. The fish was tender and tasty but I wish the stew had been a bit more juicy. Still it was a feast.
Probably the only thing I didn't like that evening was the semolina halva (irmik dessert) stuffed with vanilla ice cream. I'm usually a real fan of it but unfortunately it was served cold. The proper way is to bring the halva warm so that the ice cream melts and creates a chocolate souffle feeling. Eleos was really busy that night so I hope that was the reason.
Luckily, we were soon back in heaven as our waiter brought us the food basket; another treat on the house. The bitter almond liqueur "on the side" warmed our throat and lightened our stomach.
Normally coffee should be drunk before liqueur but this time we made an exception and finished with a strong Turkish coffee and Turkish delight.

The food and a small bottle of raki cost 75TL per person. It's neither cheap nor expensive and definitely worth it. A great atmosphere, a beautiful view, delicious food, and fast service...the perfect place to gather friends.

P.S. Eleos has also a branch in Yesilkoy. I haven't had the chance to visit but from what I've heard, it's supposed to be really nice as well.
