Benim Paris'im / Paris My Way

One of the best sides of living in Istanbul is that we are geographically close to Europe. At least that's what my American friends think :). It gives you the ability to visit anywhere in Europe over a long weekend. When our friend told us she was getting married in Paris, Ozgur and I immediately took the Monday and Tuesday off and booked our flight to Paris. It's fair to say we flew in to Paris for the weekend (I've always wanted to say that :)). As always, this post is divided into sections composed of accomodation, food, shopping, and sights. Since Paris is a food paradise, we ended up trying so much that we decided to talk about the food in a separate post. This one covers everything except for food, and Champs Elysees, and Eiffel, and Louvre...
For English, please scroll down until the Turkish text is finished...

Odaların her biri ufak olmakla birlikte oldukça lüks.

Madeleine:
Chanel, Louboutin ve Hermes'i arıyorsanız Madeleine doğru yer.

Her kredi kartını kabul etmiyor.

Eiffel kulesi hemen dibinde. Taze sıkılmış meyve suyu ve şarabını yudumlayarak Eiffel'in tadını çıkartabileceğiniz ideal bir yer. Akşam kalmak isterseniz de müzenin terasında yer alan Les Ombres restoranında oturup bu sefer aydınlatılmış Eiffel'i görebilirsiniz.

Les Docks Fashion and Design Center'da Modacıların Sergilerini Gez:

A Year in the Merde Kitabını Alıp Bir Parkta Oku:
A Year in the Merde son zamanların en popüler kitaplarından birisi.

Where to Stay?

Le General:
Le General is a four star boutique hotel within walking distance to the popular Marais district. Because it's located in a more calm and relatively less central area, the price is so much cheaper. The rooms are simple but chic. Ours had a beautiful balcony.
The concierge is very helpful and the hotel is just nearby a main metro station: Republique. It's also very close to Canal St. Martin, which I will talk more about later.
Another pleasant surprise was the free to use Nespresso machine in the room.
We paid 130 euros / night on average (including the weekend).

Hotel Athenee:
Please don't confuse this hotel with the famous Plaza Athenee. Hotel Athenee is a luxury four star boutique hotel with a superb location in Madeleine. It's only within a few minutes of walking distance to Champs Elysees and Arc De Triomphe. The decoration and design belongs to famous French designer Jacques Garcio. Inspired by the 19th century France, Jacques Garcio has created a hotel composed of small but luxurious rooms. Last year we stayed for 150 euro / night but I believe the price has gone up a bit. Still you might email the hotel and ask if you can stay in the single room. The room itself is very small but the bed easily fits two.

Aside from these two, I'd suggest you search for hotels in St. Germain and Marais. The prices are high but you might come across a good deal.

.....................................................................................................................................

Where to Shop and What?

I haven't included Champs Elysees. Instead here are some great alternatives that satisfy the same needs and hopefully much more.

Merci:
Located in the upper Marais, this four story boutique complex sells stylish pieces of clothes and home accessories. It's possible to find design items from Stella McCartney and Paul Smith at more accessible prices. The best part is that a a portion of the profits go to charity (haven't been able to learn exactly how much).
When tired from shopping, you can help yourself to a coffee at the store's cafe.

Tabio:
Tabio is a Japanese sock brand. If you've ever seen pics of Sarah Jessica Parker wearing open stilettos with socks, you can probably figure out the types of socks Tabio sells. The options are endless and beyond imagination. There are also mens socks available but it's the ladies ones that are most interesting.

Adrenaline:
Adrenaline is a small luxury vintage boutique in the St. Germain district. Items such as Louis Vuitton suitcases and Birkin bags are incredibly expensive but if you're lucky, you might find a Chanel bag at a slightly "cheaper" price.

The Back Streets of St. Germain:
Both Tabio and Adrenaline are in the St. Germain district. If you get off at the Odeon metro and walk towards Carrefour De l'Odeon, you'll end up in an area with streets hiding beautiful and interesting stores (such as the hat store above).
There're also a lot of cute cafes available.

Madeleine:
If you're looking for luxury brands like Chanel, Louboutin and Hermes, Madeleine is the right place to be. Chanel has many stores so you won't have a hard time finding it but you'll have to look a bit longer for Louboutin. Of course it depends on which store you're looking for but the one we went to is on a more quiet street in Madeleine. The address is at the end of the post. Even if you don't want to buy, at least stop by the area to watch people go crazy over shopping and have some Macarons at Laduree.

Macarons at Carl Marletti and Gerard Mulot:
Laduree might be well known for its macarons but it isn't the only place to have good macarons. Carl Marletti and Gerard Mulot are two patissiers famous by the locals for their heavenly desserts. As for the macarons, the fruit flavored ones were amazing.

Marais:
Marais is again a shopping area but what I loved most about it were the charming cafes and the crowd.

What to See and Do Where?

Hang Out Like Locals on Canal St. Martin:
Canal St. Martin is where the "real" Paris and the Parisiens can be found. Located close to Le General Hotel, i.e. where we stayed, it's a beautiful area enjoyed by mostly young hipsters, where they sit down along the canal, enjoy the sun, and drink wine or beer. On a sunny day, there's nothing better.
If you find it a bit too chilled out, you can always settle at Chez Prune, the see and be seen trendy Right Bank cafe by Canal St. Martin.
While you're there, don't forget to stop by the shops on Rue Beaurepaire. It's possible to find some really unique and interesting clothing and home accessories.

Explore the City with Velib:
Velib is a public bicycle sharing system in Paris. It's possible to find a Velib station all around the city with only about 300 metres between each station. The first half hour is free and the entire day costs only two euros or so. The many pick up and drop off stations allow you to get the bicycle at one point and drop it at another. You can get the bike and drop it off as many times as you want. All you need is a credit card with a microchip. Otherwise it won't work. Make sure you check that the bicycle you take doesn't have flat tires.

Enjoy the Eiffel Tower from Cafe Branly:
Rather then spending your entire morning or afternoon waiting in line to get on top of the Eiffel Tower, how about enjoying it in a peaceful atmosphere at a nearby cafe. Cafe Branly is located within the Musee du Quai Branly. It's right by the Eiffel Tower and offers a wonderful view and delicious freshly squeezed juices and wines. You can also make a reservation at Les Ombres, the rooftop restaurant of Musee du Quai Branly and further enjoy the gorgeous view of Eiffel during night when the lights are one.

Visit the Fashion Exhibitions at Les Docks Fashion and Design Center:
Les Docks is a recently opened fashion complex. Although there are a few store where you can shop, the main idea is to visit fashion exhibitions. The majority of its visitors are fashion school students although a lot of tourists come to see the beautiful building and exhibitions. The terrace hosts a giant rooftop bar that overlooks the Seine river.

Buy a Sandwich from a Patissier and Some Cheeses from a Fromager and Go For a Picnic in the Luxembourg Gardens:
The Parisiens love to picnic. Every Sunday the Luxembour Gardens fill with the local crowd who enjoy the one day the grass is allowed to lay down on. It's possible to find a patissier and fromager at almost every corner in Paris, but we've still included two in our next post if you want to try them out.

Hang out in the Cafes in the Marais and St. Germain Districts and People Watch:
A pizzeria in Marais that always seems to be full
The two areas became our favorite. The absolute best cafes and restaurants are mostly located in Marais and St. Germain. Of course they're both also a heaven for shopoholics.

Buy A Year in the Merde and Read it While in Paris:
A Year in the Merde is a a book about the adventures of an English guy in Paris. You should get it and read it while in Paris. It will provide you with laughters and a much more understanding about why certain things just are in Paris.
